After a long day of travelling, we arrived in Johannesburg! We met with our Intrepid agents, Jo and Carrie, and our tour guide, Johannes, for the next five nights. Johannes is a local guide who lives just outside of Johannesburg. He has worked with Intrepid for over 15 years.
Firstly, we stayed at the Maslow Business Hotel in Sandton, where we went for a dip in the pool and met the rest of the TTG sustainable heroes for food & Welcome drinks.
The following day, we had a 5 a.m. wake-up call to drive to Blyde River Canyon, which was incredible and is also the largest river canyon in the world! It was definitely worth the early start!
We stopped for refreshments and enjoyed the amazing scenes before heading off for our overnight stay with the Black Mambas in the Olifants West Area.
We arrived at the nature reserve with the Black Mambas. This all-female anti-poaching unit protects and reserves local wildlife.
After unpacking our bags, we took a short stroll around the bush. The black mambas are highly knowledgeable about nature and wildlife. Then, it was time for food and drinks around the campfire.
The next morning, we were back on the road to stay two nights at the Kubu Safari Lodge, a private nature reserve surrounded by wildlife. The Lodge has over 50 wild animals, including zebras, giraffes, and impalas.
The following day, we went on our full-day safari game drive in Kruger National Park, 40 minutes from our Lodge. Kruger is the size of Israel, so you can imagine how much wildlife is around this place!
We had an incredible experience, with our first encounter being a full lion and his tribe. We spent over 6 hours at the game drive, from wild cheetahs hunting for prey, giraffes, zebras, rhinos and elephants! We encountered 5 animals during the day! It was amazing to see these animals in their own habitat.
The next morning, we were back on the road to Johannesburg for our final evening there. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Rose Bank, the most popular area in Johannesburg. After such a busy few days, it was time to wind down for the evening and prepare for our day trip to Soweto.
We were collected from our hotel in Tuk Tuk and took to the streets of Soweto, roughly 30 minutes from Johannesburg. We met with local families and heard stories from the Soweto uprising that put Soweto on the Map.
We then visited Mandela House and heard stories and truths about Nelson Mandela. The next stop after our tour was home time, ready for a long trip back to the UK.
This trip would be suitable for adventurous people who like to be constantly on the go and love seeing the sights and the culture. It would also suit anyone okay with early mornings and busy days!
Kruger National Park was a surreal experience, with wildlife at your fingertips! You might not guarantee a good sighting for a few hours, but when you do, it's such a thrill!
Kubu Safari Lodge because it's in the heart of a private game reserve and is very authentic, with incredible wildlife in and around the reserve.
We mainly ate at reserves and had authentic, traditional African meals.
